Well, I have to report that the writing for Elysium is going well & the wider story is coming together even better. So far I've found that my MC female is eventually interested in 2 very different guys and the implications are... problematic. While that's not so unexpected, what it's done to the story arcs of my MC & SC males is. In fact, the SC male may actually have to be bumped up to MC status at some point. That was a happy revelation & actually this whole thing has helped me to flesh out his character far more. I'm pretty excited. Now if I could just fanagle a trip to Paris & call it a business expense, I'd be over the frakkin' moon. ;) (random mention: BSG final eps begin Friday!)

Oh, and I'm thrilled to say that the Twilight Series did do something for me that was way positive. It reminded me of a book I read in 2000 & adored that was a gothic novel about a girl (Beckett), newly moved & living in NYC with her father (madre is dead), is new at a posh private school & strange things are going on. You guessed it, vampires. ;) It made me wonder if Meyer had herself read it & been inspired. Only problem was, I couldn't recall the name or author of the book. Grrr! This sent me on a multiday mission & finally, joy & rapture, I found it! It's Innocence by Jane Mendelsohn & I highly recommend it. Mendelsohn says in 200 pages what I doubt Meyer said in well over 1000 & she did it in such a dark, lyrical way. I will warn, it's not marketed as YA and is damned bloody but the allegory is keen & Beckett's voice is a joy to hear. I think of Innocence as what Twilight would be if it were Literature & not PopCult.

I am also happy to report that I have successfully found a new home for my unread (unopened) copies of New Moon, Eclipse & Breaking Dawn. I mean really, we all knew I was never going to finish this series, right? Better to turn in my hairshirt than continue the reader's flagellation. I'm sending them gratis to someone who is dying for their own new copies & I feel a finer person. At least I don't have to endure that look of disbelief from the hubs any longer or put on the act to family members that I'm really going to read the whole series, while they wonder why I haven't done, so far. I honestly think some of them are wondering just what kind of woman I am. I am wondering the same about them.

I guess the answer lies in Innocence. I adored it because I could identify with Beckett, maybe in the same way so many women identified with Bella. They used to be her & were interested in reacquainting with that part of themselves. But the thing is, I was never Bella. I was Beckett & from the first page to the last, I inhabited her world with her. I slipped her on like a favorite & rediscovered sweater from the back of the closet and we still fit, she and I. And nine years later, Beckett still abides with me. She was hiding out in the recesses of my mind, with my teenaged self and between the two, Bella Swan was never going to be allowed to stay & was most certainly not welcome. That I did not realize this before embarking on this read is beyond me.

Not only were they not interested in her, they loathed her. They conspired & whispered and regarded her with open disdain. Not because they were most popular or pretty, because they had their awkward moments too. Not because they didn't harbor crushes, because they surely did. Not because they didn't recall the all encompassing nature of desire, because they absolutely did. They despised her because they saw quite clearly that Bella was another creature entirely and in the end everything is tribal. Bella was not kin nor kindred & the edict came down: Bitch gotta' go!

Besos!
xoxo

In other news, while writing & LJ were being neglected...

  • 15:00 Finally found title of vampire book I loved but lent out ages ago! Just ordered a copy from alibris.com ! Made my day! #
  • 16:51 @linlori Innocence by Jane Mendelsohn. Quick read (gothic nov) heavy on the allegory & darkness. What Twilight would've been if it were Lit. #
  • 16:56 @linlori Sound familiar? MC Beckett, lives with dad in NYC, highly beautiful grp of girls @ new school, there's a boy & strangeness ensues. #
  • 16:57 @linlori Basically, I just like Beckett's voice and the haunting/lyrical way she tells her story. Wonder if SMeyer read it & was inspired. #
  • 17:01 @linlori Now why did you have to tell me that?! :) Gah! That's weak! I guess she never read Rice either, the books are deeper than the flick #
  • 17:02 @linlori TLB was SO not creepy. She's not that much older than me & I thought it was great as a kid, just darker Goonies. Whatev! #
  • 17:08 @linlori I devoured Rice & she ruined me forever for lesser vampires. I'd run off with Louis no question & be always in awe of Lestat. Srsly #
  • 17:19 @linlori One of my BFFs is similarly afflicted. :) She was his apologist for me & made her case so I can see now why some adore him so. #
  • 17:20 @linlori I seriously know the feeling. That's how I lost Innocence. Try alibris.com. My new copy of Innocence: $1.99. I'm very happy. #
  • 17:41 @linlori What was the thing that pulled you in? The danger factor? The perpetual seduction mode? Lestat worried me from the start. Yikes! #
  • 17:43 @justcallmesamma That's crap! Who's trying to peddle that shite?! #
  • 17:46 @justcallmesamma Please do report back with what they're saying. That's lunacy! Frakkers! #
  • 17:56 @justcallmesamma Absolutely understandable. Ridiculous! #
  • 17:57 @linlori Agreed. I have to admit to being fascinated by his comfort with his nature & the ease with which he killed. Wholly compelling. #
  • 17:58 @Phyaflyjones What the hell are they advertising?! I've seen both versions & can't figure it out! #
  • 17:59 Must get food... heading to kitchen. #
  • 07:59 @linlori You know, I've not read any of her newest obsession. I imagine if ARs style is still the same, I'll still be pulled in. And you? #
  • 08:02 Wrote until 2:30 this morning. It was bliss. :) Now I've got work to do & an important project to finish. Gotta get on & get my coffee. #
  • 09:07 Making my peace with the Twilight series: tinyurl.com/7fehor . It has finally come to pass. #
  • 09:09 @linlori I don't know if that's good or bad. :/ I don't mind change of theme, I think, but has her style changed as well? Could be a prob. #
